Rui Pombal
Rui Pombal has worked in aviation medicine for over twenty years as medical director for UCS – TAP Air Portugal Group Health Services, running its aeromedical centre in Lisbon. He is currently IATA Medical Advisor.
Rui holds a Master’s in Health Sciences – Aviation Medicine, and is a certified class 1&3 EASA and Senior FAA medical examiner. His other areas of special interest include travel medicine and clinical assessment in pharmacovigilance/safety of medicines. He regularly teaches in various national and international post-graduate aviation medicine, travel medicine and pharmacovigilance programmes, and has authored or co-authored articles and book chapters in those fields.
Rui is a founding member of SMAPor, the Portuguese Aerospace Medicine Society, of which he was the first President. He has been active in international organisations as well, having chaired the AsMA Air Transport Medicine Committee and been part of IAASM’s Selectors Committee.
He received the IAMA International Airline Medical Association George Kidera Award in 2021, and is now President Elect of IAMA.
Rui feels honoured and excited to have been given the opportunity to chair ICAM 2024, and believes this fits well with his passion for communicating aerospace medicine topics to colleagues from medicine and allied professions, as well as to the general public.
